Heaven and Earth Be One

We lift up our voices in a colorful program exploring anguish, hope, and the healing power of heavenly light as we yearn for God’s presence here on Earth. Composed by Canadian-born Black composer Nathaniel Dett, Listen to the Lambs pleads for comfort for God’s people, and reminds us that “He shall feed his flock like a shepherd.” In his shimmering O Lux Beata Trinitas, Slovenian composer Andrej Makor sets an ancient text imploring the trinity of holy light to shine upon us, as MacMillan’s O Radiant Dawn invokes the “splendor of eternal light” and “sun of justice” to shine on those who dwell in darkness. You’ll hear inspired music by Russian composers Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Chesnokov with Magnum Chorum soloists, as well as Earth and Water from McDermid’s From Light to Light where “the heartbeat of God whispers to dark earth: Be. Here. Now.” Rounding out our midwinter offering is Elaine Hagenberg’s lyrical This is My Father’s World accompanied by violin and piano, and Rest by Ken Burton, a Black British musician who served as choirmaster for the Grammy winning film Black Panther. Join us and let your spirit be filled.
